The unsettling truth is that survival needs are boring for the reward circuitry once they are predictable, while a high, icy peak keeps the probability calculus unstable, so each gain in altitude triggers a fresh spike in phasic dopamine, a teaching signal that updates synaptic weights in the striatum and prefrontal cortex instead of merely confirming that the body will live another day.
More extreme still is how effort hijacks value. Hard goals recruit the anterior cingulate cortex and striatal pathways that overprice rewards earned through costly action, so the summit becomes a distorted jackpot, its subjective value inflated far beyond its nutritional or financial worth, turning pain, cold, and risk into part of the payoff rather than a deterrent.
