Counter to the image of a sprinting chaser, the fox behaves more like a patient sensor array, holding still so that signal to noise ratio improves, then making tiny head tilts to exploit interaural time differences and interaural level differences, the same acoustic cues engineers copy in directional microphones. Short steps follow. Then a freeze. The body aligns with the sound source, often against the wind so that scent and noise from the fox do not contaminate the scene.
Most revealing is the signature leap. A sudden high arc, forelegs tucked, then a near vertical plunge drives paws through heather and into the shallow soil where voles and shrews run.
