The counterintuitive point is simple. Curves protect attention. When a road bends, drivers must constantly adjust steering, process depth cues, and update a mental model of the route, all of which recruit the prefrontal cortex and sustain cortical arousal. On straight segments, by contrast, steering corrections become rhythmic and automatic, heart rate variability drops, and electroencephalography studies record more theta power, a marker of drowsiness and mind-wandering.
Safety engineers now argue that monotony itself is a design hazard.
