The core advantage is mechanical, not mystical. Cautious feet keep speed low and throttle inputs smooth, which holds the tire in static friction rather than letting it slip into kinetic friction where grip drops sharply. Drivers who assume generous traction brake late, turn hard, and spike wheel torque, overwhelming the contact patch just as sand, dust and micro‑cracks in sandstone reduce the coefficient of friction.
There is a cognitive reset, too. The tiptoe cue narrows attention to tire placement, weight transfer and slip angle, the same variables that underpin professional rally technique. Treating every rock as suspect makes novices scan surfaces, modulate steering and throttle, and build a feedback loop between steering feel and tire noise. Confidence without that loop hides early warning signs; the first signal becomes a full spin. Caution, drilled into habit, catches the slide when it is still only a whisper.
